So oftentimes we have students come in and ask for help getting into Oxford Law or King’s Econ. Sometimes that’s great – we’re more than happy to help you study what you love. But sometimes these same students just want to study political science or philosophy, but are nervous about their long-term career prospects with these disciplines.

Here’s where I rave about the unique advantages of the US education system. Many of you have heard it before, about the liberal arts college system, general education requirements, blah blah blah.

But the truth is, the US education system allows you to explore several other options before you ultimately decide to focus on that practical major anyway. Even if you come out of an economics department at a top university, you’ll likely have dabbled in music, philosophy, mathematics, sustainable development, and a variety of other subjects. You’ll be more well-versed in your subject within the context of other disciplines, and you’ll have had the opportunity to pursue your interests without committing to a long-term career in them.

Moreover, the American liberal arts system stresses learning both inside and outside the classroom. Lessons aren’t just about exams or papers, but about volunteering to do research, interning at the UN, or working downtown on Wall Street (clearly I went to college in New York City).

Anyways, think about it before you decide that one or the other is definitely the better option. Think about applying to law in the UK and philosophy in the US, or engineering in both countries, or anything else – sometimes, it’s much easier to figure out what you want once you have offers (hopefully) in hand.
