In a previous post, Prep Zone consultant Sruti discussed the merits of the US college system. A more flexible experience is great for students who are not quite sure of their long-term academic and professional goals. However, for students who are resolute and passionate about their future plans, attending a UK school can be a more direct route to reach those goals. Some of the top students who wish to study in the UK have their sights set on the academically-prestigious Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge Universities).

If you are familiar with the US system, interviews are typically held by local alumni who ask basic questions over coffee and offer an opportunity for students to add upon their current paper applications. These interviews are not make-or-break as they are generally only given to students who have access. On the other hand, Oxbridge interviews are typically offered to any competitive students. Note that depending on your subject, you may need to take a pre-interview exam. Once you are done with your exams, you are ready to tackle your interview!

Be prepared to discuss your personal statement in depth. Be able to tell your interviewer your personal interests in the subject. Unlike American interviews, you will be expected to already know a great deal about your subject. The questions they ask you come in all forms- some more like riddles, some open-ended, and some fact-seeking. Even if you do not get the question right, it is important to show intelligent thought process. It’s best to give answers that are long enough to make the conversation flow rather than just back-and-forth question and answering. Since the questions change from interview to interview, you will not be able to study the exact content. However, if you meet with one of our consultants, we will be able to help you review previous interview questions and the possible answers to give you an idea of what makes a good answer. While some are rather difficult, many of the questions are very interesting.

As for the actual logistics, be well aware of all the details so you can be comfortable on the day of the interview. While you will not be quizzed on their achievements, it is a good idea to look up your interviewer. Make sure you know ahead of time where your interview is and how to get there. You will not be graded on your attire, but first impressions count. Make sure your attire is appropriate and not distracting.

The most important thing is to feel prepared and comfortable during your interview, which is why we are here. With our help, if you are passionate about your intended field of study, it should show in your interview.
