New Research Shows how the SAT/ACT are Vital Assessment Factors Colleges

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many prestigious universities, including Harvard and MIT, shifted away from standardized testing requirements for admissions. This move was part of a broader reassessment of the role that SAT and ACT scores should play in evaluating prospective students, as the pandemic made it challenging for many to safely sit for these exams.

However, as we emerge from the pandemic, there has been a significant shift back towards the inclusion of standardized tests.

Dartmouth’s recent research has been pivotal in this change, revealing that SAT and ACT scores are indeed strong indicators of a student’s potential for success in college. This study suggests that these tests can act as equalizers, particularly benefiting students lacking access to advanced coursework or extracurricular opportunities that typically strengthen college applications.

In response to these findings, institutions like Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown, and MIT are moving away from their test-optional policies back to requiring tests again. This decision is informed by the evidence that standardized tests can provide opportunities for a broader and more diverse range of students to be admitted.

While some schools will remain test-optional in the coming year, with top institutions shifting back to using these tests based on research, for international students, their SAT helps break past the first barrier of the application, which is heavily looking at grades, scores, and coursework difficulty.

At Prep Zone, we understand the importance of these developments and are committed to helping students navigate this changing landscape. Our training programs are tailored to empower students to achieve their best possible SAT and ACT scores, thereby giving them an edge and enhancing their chances of being considered in the holistic review process of top-tier universities.
