Are you looking to apply to US colleges? Are you thinking of majoring in humanities, mathematics, or any type of sciences? If you answered yes to both questions, then you should consider applying to liberal arts colleges. But, what exactly is a liberal arts education? A liberal arts education is interdisciplinary, letting students gain an overview of humanities, mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences. Humanities include literature, philosophy, foreign languages, arts, and ethics.

There are five benefits of attending a liberal arts college. First, the college’s primary focus is undergraduate students while research universities prioritize their graduate and research programs. Second, liberal arts colleges tend to have smaller student populations compared to research universities. With a smaller population, students get to know everyone on campus, have more interactions with professors, and have smaller class sizes. An average class size in a liberal arts college would be less than 30 students. Third, there are more opportunities for students to get involved in campus, especially for leadership positions in student organizations. Fourth, employers are increasingly looking for graduates with analytical, problem solving, and communication skills, which are the skills learned through a liberal arts program. And finally, because students receive an overview of various courses, it is not a vocational career path. Instead, graduates are open to a wide range of career opportunities.

One misconception students have is that since liberal arts colleges are focused on teaching, there are less research opportunities for students. It may seem as if there is a greater chance for undergraduate students to get involved in research at a large research institution, however, it is incorrect. Most research activities are reserved for graduate students. For liberal arts colleges, because there is no graduate student population, all the research opportunities are open to undergraduates.

The five benefits are just the tip of the iceberg; studying in a liberal arts college will open your mind. If you interested in learning more about liberal arts colleges, here are some helpful links: national liberal arts rankings and guide to liberal arts colleges.
