This workshop is for students applying to college in 2023 or 2024.

Join our workshop to gain valuable insights into optimising your US college application, with a specific focus on “Why This College/School” essay development. Our college admissions expert, Tyler, will guide participants through the process, sharing tips that have proven successful for our students. As the personal statement draws upon the student’s life, the “Why Essay” draws upon the school’s resources and community with a focus on how the student connects with them. From which school details to cover to how to insert them into essays to show students’ goals and passions, we’ll cover all aspects of crafting a standout “Why Essay.”

During the workshop, participants will engage in interactive activities where we will review and critique previous examples that have worked. We will also break down the statement creation needed for the essay and how to add details found online to participants’ own stories.

Then, we will walk participants through a rapid mock “Why This College/School” essay development, so that they can see where to grab things from and how to organise things found online into an essay format. Do note that the mock process will be done for Cornell.

Lastly, participants will be set off to complete a task to demonstrate that they can find appropriate things online and make statements about a school or program. They will work through the exercise using Cornell as an example and develop strong statements depending on their major choice.

Through reviewing several examples that worked to get students into top programs and going through the example exercise, we hope that all participants will be ready to dive into the several “Why This College/School” essays that many leading US colleges ask for.
